1. The New Scholars Committee is Formed!

While there were almost 40 doctoral students at the Padova meeting, there were fewer people in their first 7 years of teaching; this for a variety ofreasons.

So as to offer greater stability and opportunity for this generation, the new CTEWC Planning committee formed a committee of new scholars (representatives from each continent) to see how they can prepare for the next conference (to be held July 24-27, 2010 in Trento - Italy) and how
they can network among themselves in the interim.

The "New Scholars Committee" will meet virtually, except in the summer 2008 when two of the members will meet with the planning committee in Trento, to discuss how we can help the "New Scholars Committee" get more solid participation in the upcoming conference from this particular generation.

The new committee:

Andrea Vicini, Italy, Chair

Kathryn Getek, US
Claudia Montes De Oca Ayala, Bolivia
Suzanne Mulligan, Ireland
Agbonkhianmeghe Orobator, Nigeria
Joseph Pushpa, India
Roland Tuazon, Philippines
Ronaldo Zacharias, Brazil

5. Linda Hogan is completing the collection of essays on Applied Ethics and will be submitting them at the end of May to Orbis press.

6. On behalf of the planning committee, Linda Hogan flew to Nairobi in early March to begin working on a scholarship program for graduate studies in theological ethics for African women. She reports on her visit:

During the final plenary of Padua conference the CTEWC Committee took up a mandate to develop a strategy that would support African women in their training in moral theology and theological ethics. In light of that mandate on March 9th I traveled, with a colleague, to Nairobi to begin discussions with
people there about how we might best proceed in light of this mandate. Our starting point was to discuss the matter with the Executive of AOSK, (Association of Sisterhoods of Kenya). We had many excellent and fruitful discussions in which the needs, interests and expertise of many constituencies of women were considered. We encountered a great deal of enthusiasm and
support for the project in Nairobi and are now in the process of discussing next steps.

7. David DeCosse wrote on the conference. See his essay at http://www.scu.edu/scm/spring2007/afterwords.cfm
